When Was MuttKnee Brace Created?
MuttKnee Brace was developed in 2002 by Daryllanne Franks and her amazing husband Jerry Thomas. This assisted their then eight-year-old dog, Muttley. She suffered an injury to her knee after slipping on snow and ice. The cost of a vet's visit and the suggested knee surgery was beyond their budget. She couldn't run and barely walked, as her injured leg would drag and tremble as she moved. They couldn't bear watching her shaky attempts at keeping up with the pack any longer. They knew they had to help, so they decided to design a brace similar to braces for human knees.
It took a couple of months of wearing the brace, but Muttley started running with the pack again. The brace supported her injured leg, allowing her to begin walking quickly. Eventually, she was able to run as if she had never been injured. She continued to run until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge at 16.
In 2022 Tamara Vieau, who worked with Daryllanne for 12 years, took over the company and is continuing to help dogs around the world in their recovery from knee injuries.
Since Muttley's first brace, many changes, revisions, and improvements have been made to the MuttKnee Brace. It took the help of family, friends, neighbors, and local vets to develop the MuttKnee Brace that is now available. We have helped over 12,000 dogs of all sizes improve the quality of their lives.
How Do I Make Sure the Measurements Are Right?
With our years of experience, we can catch an error before we sew the brace and will request new measurements. We guarantee a proper fit, so if there are any fitting issues we remake the brace, free of charge, and get another set to you. We offer virtual calls to aid with the measuring process, as well as post fitting calls, to help make sure you have adjusted everything correctly. If you aren't able to do a virtual call, or not sure how, we have a team who can walk you through the process and make it stress free for you! We are also able to see problems, almost immediately, with a simple picture being sent to us to see where the issue might be!
Should My Dog Wear the MuttKnee Brace All the Time?
We strongly recommend that your dog only wear the brace during normal waking hours of the day. We suggest you put the brace onin the morning and take it off at night when they rest.
Can I Wash the MuttKnee Brace?
Yes. The brace is washable and can even be used during water therapy. We recommend air drying your brace after washing.
How Long Does Recovery Take With the MuttKnee Brace?
Three to six months is the average time your dog should wear the brace while the scar tissue builds up in the correct area and strengthens the knee. Of course, the age of the dog and the extent of the injury will play a part in this.
For extreme activities, we recommend that your dog wear the MuttKnee Brace for the first year to avoid reinjuring the knee.
When Should I Stop Using the MuttKnee Brace?
As recovery can vary, keep an eye on how your dog walks after a few months. That will help you determine whether or not further use is necessary. We are always here to answer any questions, even months after you ordered! Checking in with your veterinarian for follow up is always recommended.
What If My Dog Suffers an Injury to the Other Knee?
There's no need to worry! We can retrofit another MuttKnee Brace to the original to support the other knee for $70. It is common for a dog to end up with an injury in what is now their "good leg" days or even months after the initial injury on the other. We almost always recommend you order two braces from the beginning to give that extra support on the good leg and prevent the same injury in the future.
Returns
Due to the custom nature of each brace there are NO REFUNDS. We do guarantee a proper fit; meaning if the brace is not fitting properly, we make a new set and send them to you free of charge. This will require virtual calls and/or pictures. IF there is a death of the dog, previously or directly after receiving the brace, please contact us.
